Fifteen combinations

Module 22: Six-card Omaha. Fifteen combinations, and the thresholds that move again.

Six-card Omaha is spread on most of the sites that spread the five-card game, usually in the same lobby, and it looks from the outside like more of the same. It is more of the same, and that is the problem: the effect Module 21 measured does not level off, it compounds. If you sit down expecting five-card Omaha with an extra card, the game will take money off you in the same way five-card Omaha takes money off a four-card player.

One rule is unchanged, and it is the rule from Module 0. Your hand is exactly two of your own cards and exactly three from the board. Six cards in your hand does not mean you may use three of them. It means you have more pairs to choose between, which is a different thing and worth saying out loud at the table until it stops needing to be said.

Every one of those partnerships is a separate chance to make a hand, and every opponent has the same number.

Everything else in this module falls out of that count, and it falls out in one direction only. More partnerships per hand means more hands connect with any given flop; more hands connecting means the best available hand is out there more often; the best available hand being out there more often means second-best hands are punished more often. Module 21 measured that chain for five cards. Six cards runs it again from a higher starting point.

There is one consolation, and it is worth holding on to while the rest of this module takes things away from you. Nothing you have learned stops being true. The pot-limit arithmetic is identical, the outs table is identical, position works the same way, the commit price is the same formula. What changes is which hands clear the thresholds those tools point at.

Check your understanding

How many two-card combinations does a six-card Omaha hand contain?

Answer: Fifteen. Right: six cards taken two at a time is fifteen, against ten for five cards and six for four.

In six-card Omaha, how many of your own cards may play in your final hand?

Answer: Exactly two. Right, and it never changes in any member of the Omaha family. More cards in your hand means more choices, never more cards you may use.

What is the mistake a five-card player is most likely to bring to a six-card game?

Answer: Assuming the adjustment from four to five cards was the whole adjustment. Right. The effect compounds rather than stopping: everything Module 21 measured moves further in the same direction.
